Dance Class Essentials: What to Wear and Bring
New to dance and feeling unsure about what your child should wear or bring? No worries—we’ve got you covered. At Northwood Dance Studio, we keep things simple, comfortable, and focused on movement. Here’s a breakdown of what your dancer needs to feel confident and ready.
General Guidelines for All Classes
- Hair should be pulled back securely off the face.
- Clothing should allow for movement without distractions.
- No jewelry or watches, please.
- Label all shoes and bags.
What to Wear: Ballet
- Leotard (pink, black, or lavender)
- Pink ballet tights
- Pink split-sole ballet slippers
- Hair in a bun or tight ponytail
What to Wear: Tap
- Leotard and dance shorts or leggings
- Black tap shoes (low heel or flat, depending on age)
- Socks or footed tights
What to Wear: Jazz
- Leotard or fitted tank top
- Jazz pants or leggings
- Black slip-on jazz shoes
What to Wear: Hip Hop
- Loose-fitting t-shirt or tank
- Joggers or sweatpants
- Clean sneakers (not street shoes)
What to Wear: Lyrical
- Leotard or fitted top
- Dance shorts or leggings
- Half-soles or foot undies
What to Bring in Your Dance Bag
- Water bottle
- Extra hair ties
- Backup tights or socks
- Small towel or wipes
