Starting something new is always a mix of excitement and nerves. Whether your child is leaping into ballet, tapping their way into rhythm, or grooving through hip hop, we want to make sure your first day at Northwood Dance Studio is smooth, welcoming, and full of joy. Here’s everything you need to know before you step through our doors.
What to Wear to Your First Dance Class Each class style has a recommended dress code. For example, ballet students typically wear a leotard, tights, and ballet slippers, while hip hop dancers can opt for comfortable athletic wear and clean sneakers. Check your welcome email or our Programs page for style-specific suggestions.
When to Arrive (and What to Do Before Class Starts) We recommend arriving 10–15 minutes early. This gives your dancer time to use the restroom, find their studio room, and shake off any jitters. Our staff will greet you at the front desk and help guide new students.
What Happens Inside the Classroom Instructors start each class with a warm-up, followed by technique, choreography, and a short cool-down. Classes are structured, upbeat, and age-appropriate. Don’t worry—your child won’t need to know anything ahead of time!
Can Parents Watch? While most classes are drop-off, we offer periodic observation days so you can see your dancer in action. This allows kids to build independence and focus while still giving parents a chance to celebrate progress.
What If My Child Is Nervous? Completely normal! Many dancers are shy at first. Our instructors are trained to welcome new students with encouragement and gentle guidance. Usually within the first few classes, students feel right at home.
What to Expect After Class Your child might come out sweaty, smiling, or even a little tired. Dance is physical and expressive! Don’t be surprised if they show you their moves the minute they get home.
